why Naruto the last only uses kurama sage mode in the movie (ain't supposed to) and not in the novel - Gen. Discussion - Comic Vine (2024)

After my recent thread for toneri moon bust freud allegation debunk, it has come to my attention that lots in the fandom are still swarmed and littered with ages old misconceptions about the last movie.

Hopefully, just like how this site used to believe that naruto or toneri are not moon busters for the longest time and other misconceptions, but eventually come around as more contrary evidence cumulated over the years.

Hopefully, it would be the same for this as well.

So what is this about?

Just like the fraud allegation toward toneri and the last naruto culumated throughout the years after the movie release due to lots of ignorant folk out there who weren't able to analyze and breakdown the physics of the feats, and how it would be a moon bust tier one cuz of their limited mathmathical/scientific knowledge.

The same thing also happened in a parallel instance in regards to the age old question of whether naruto was using his full-power on the movie to fight a life threatening threat/fight. and if so, why then did naruto not use SO6P mode rather than KCM?

That my friends is where this thread comes in to answer your questions!

The lots of you won't know this, but there were lots of production mishaps surrendering Naruto the last movie. KCM/kurama mode being used over SO6P, and deactivated rinnegan sasuke being a couple of them.

How so? the lots of you might be asking, well here's how and why:

Publishers aim to have novelizations in shops before a film is released, which means it is usually necessary to base the novelization on a screenplay instead of the completed film. - and a breakdown of how movie novelizations made by vanity fair

but in summary, movie novels are adaptations of the movie screenplay in book/novel form that tends to have extra details from the screenplays whom couldn't make it into the movie due to time contraints.

in the movie novel, it is established naruto uses KCM, but why is that? simple, cuz that's the writers (not kishimoto) of the movies by pierrot who made the screenplayand the novelization simply went off that.

unlike in the movie where naruto uses sage mode + kurama mode, naruto used KCM mode from the start till end. and thus, we already have a divergence between the novel and the movie.

so which version should we prioritize? logically, it should be the novel because it makes more sense from an literary authorial standpoint and a narrative one. and here are my main points for why so:

  • KCM/kurama mode is stackable with SO6P as seen with
  • Kurama mode+Sage mode is not, and It would thus make naruto withholding his far superior/stronger form for no sensible reason against an otsutsuki level threat which doesn't sound right
  • Toneri was an otsutsuki level threat due to the Tenseigan buff (Hamura's power)

you might be wondering! didn't kishimoto write the movie, and by extention the novel? actually, that's not the case and here is the proof/evidence for it:

citation:

Q: You have previously worked on film direction and storylines.kishimoto: I worked on the composition of " ROAD TO NINJA -NARUTO THE MOVIE- " and did character design and story supervision for "THE LAST -NARUTO THE MOVIE-". But this is the first time I've written everything from scratch, including the dialogue.

explanation: kishimoto never wrote a screenplay for a movie till boruto, he only supervised the prior ones (road to ninja, the last)

this is proven with what kishi said in another interview:

The events of the intervening years are covered inThe Last: Naruto the Movie, a full-length animated feature that hit Japanese theaters on December 6, 2014. Kishimoto himself signed on for a supervisory role in this film’s production.

kishimoto: “I didn’t originally intend for there to be a movie about these years in Naruto’s life. But when we got the proposal and I saw a draft script for it, it was great. It was a movie I wanted to see, which meant that my readers would want to see it as well, I thought. I’ve never been the sort of artist to draw romance into my work, but this movie was a chance to include just those things that I never included inNarutoas a manga.”

so who wrote the movies? it was screen writer maruo kyozuka!

Screenwriter Maruo Kyozuka said that he wanted to depict alove triangle between Naruto, Hinata and Toneri in the film. Although Naruto is initially clueless about Hinata's feelings for him, during the film he begins to acknowledge and respond to them. Hinata's character was also developed in the film, with Kyozuka saying that she had to put aside her feelings for Naruto to accept Toneri's proposal so she could find Hanabi. During this scene, Kyozuka wanted to depict Naruto at his lowest after his rejection by Hinata. He then returned Naruto to his brave self, with the character resolving to continue his mission regardless of the cost. Toneri was developed as a despicable villain.

kishimoto only supervised the guy's screenplay and provided designs. kyozuka made the screenplay and adapted it into the novel.

When asked if Kishimoto's romantic experiences are inserted into the upcomingfilm, which focuses on the romance of Hinata and, he confirmed that a little bit of his experiences are included. He explained that his wife in fact knitted a scarf for him, which gave him the idea for the scarf Hinata knits for. Before knowing this, his staff had joked that knitting a scarf for a romantic interest was sort of cliche, to which Kishimoto replied, "Um, sorry, actually, my wife knit me a scarf..." The staffers became silent.

Manga creator is credited with the original story (manga), character designs, and chief story supervisor of the film. In particular, he is drawing new designs for the title character in the movie. The magazine notes for one set of designs, titled "Ramen Ichiraku": "Naruto's body is very toned, his hair is cut short, and his expression is one of an adult."

now that we have established the truth of the matter which is how the film screenplay wasn't written by the author, but rather by a

third party writer that's not kishimoto

we now are gonna get the full picture why KCM/kurama mode got used instead of SPO6M which is because it wasn't kishi the one steering the movie, thus the writer had no authority to spoil SPO6M reveal in the movie.

let's establish other things in here. this isn't some one off case kind of thing as there is actually a precedent for this within the series itself. with the prior movie road to ninja movie (2012)

as any of you who watched the movie know, it wasn't used in the movie in favor of a no-canonical kurama summon

this is obviously because bijuu mode wouldn't appear until a year and a half later in the series when kurama link mode got introduced in the anime (2013)

the same scheme happens with other series like one piece or dragon ball. for example, toei in the movie red has shown only a glimpse of G5 even tho luffy has it cuz it hasn't shown up officially in the anime at the time yet. even tho in terms of narrative of the story, I'd be counter-productive for luffy to hold back on using his strongest form which is likes miles away stronger than his G4. but it happens regardless since it's a it's an industry practice

similar stuff also happened with dragon ball and SSJ introduction and usage in the lord slug/cooler movies.

many other long running anime movies tend to have this debacle. heck, they couldn't even decide whether to give sasuke his rinnegan or not till they realized it would break the canon if they didn't lol.

in the same sense of how the boruto manga/anime arc is more canonical than the movie

i should also point that such production mishaps also happened with the boruto movie.

Urashiki was originally designed by Masashi Kishimoto to be the third member of Momoshiki's group in Boruto: Naruto the Movie, but was ultimately cut from the film, along with Toneri, due to time constraints.

- Naruto: The Animation Chronicle book

momoshiki design change.

this all cuz of how the production of these movies were tight-scheduled and almost back to back

Q: I understand that work on the script for " BORUTO -NARUTO THE MOVIE- " had already begun when " THE LAST -NARUTO THE MOVIE- " was released in December of last year . A short, intensive serialization of the spin-off of this work ("NARUTO Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring") also started in April, but what was the schedule like?

kishimoto: I finished writing the movie script around the end of January. After that, I made some revisions, so I think I finished all the work on the script around the end of February. But for me, the work on the movie had come to a close by the beginning of February, so I think I started drawing pictures for the short serialization in parallel in February. The short serialization starts with deciding on the characters. You can't work on the story without creating the characters. After deciding on the overall concept, I thought about it week by week.

and before anyone asks, yes, urashiki is canon. even his anime appearance in the boruto anime is canon as well

tho unlike how the boruto movie got reworked in the anime/manga. the last movie wasn't as lucky as the boruto movie. so the only faithful iteration of the story is the novel since it follows along the style normalized in Boruto where naruto just uses SPO6M power while cloaked with KCM. it should be also noted that kurama mode and KCM are the same thing, just that the former is KCM Full chakra/cooperation with kurama

the terms KCM 1 and 2 are fanmade and used exclusively by fans and are not used in official capacity at all. and it's beast mode or sometimes the abbreviation BSM of which refer to when naruto uses his kurama avatar in KCM2.

hence why both the novel/movie are using kurama mode, albeit the movie iteration diverges by using sage mode stacked onto it rather than as-is since it's naturally stackable with SPO6M power/chakra like it's established in Boruto.

hence why the movie would have looked like this if it followed up on the same step notes like this

this movie without a doubt is the source of confusion for why the age old question that still lingers around ''does naruto still have SO6P mode in boruto?'' question. no doubt on that

thanks for reading my thread and i hope it was informative for y'all. freel free to cite my thread in case u ever wanna clear it up for others but donn't wanna delve into a rabbit hole with them.

TLDR: novel is more canon friendly than the movie, novel naruto is using SO6P+kurama mode whereas movie naruto uses only kurama mode+sage mode
